Forklift certification lasts three years: OSHA requires an evaluation of each operator’s performance at least once every three years (29 CFR 1910.178(l)(4)(iii)). It can end sooner. An unsafe-driving observation, an accident or near-miss, a new type of truck or a change in the workplace all require refresher training. And the certification is your employer’s record, so a new employer must make sure you are qualified for their site.
Quick answer
| Situation | What OSHA requires |
|---|---|
| Routine renewal | Performance evaluation at least every 3 years, (l)(4)(iii) |
| Seen driving unsafely | Refresher training and evaluation, (l)(4)(ii)(A) |
| Accident or near-miss | Refresher training and evaluation, (l)(4)(ii)(B) |
| Evaluation shows unsafe operation | Refresher training, (l)(4)(ii)(C) |
| Assigned a different type of truck | Refresher training, (l)(4)(ii)(D) |
| Workplace condition changes | Refresher training, (l)(4)(ii)(E) |
| Changing employers | New employer must ensure you are trained and evaluated, and may credit prior training under (l)(5) |
The 3-year rule
Paragraph (l)(4)(iii) of 29 CFR 1910.178 says an evaluation of each powered industrial truck operator’s performance shall be conducted at least once every three years. OSHA does not say the operator must retake a full course every three years. The requirement is the evaluation, which means someone qualified watches you operate the truck and handle loads and confirms you do it safely.
Many employers pair the evaluation with a short refresher course, and some set a shorter interval (for example every year) as company policy. That is allowed, since the three years is a maximum.
When you need refresher training earlier
Paragraph (l)(4)(ii) lists five triggers that require refresher training, with an evaluation of its effectiveness, regardless of how long it has been:
- The operator has been observed operating the truck in an unsafe manner.
- The operator has been involved in an accident or near-miss incident.
- The operator has received an evaluation that reveals they are not operating the truck safely.
- The operator is assigned to drive a different type of truck.
- A condition in the workplace changes in a manner that could affect safe operation of the truck.
When one of these happens, the employer should record the new training and evaluation dates, and the three-year period is counted from the latest evaluation.

What happens when you change employers?
There is no portable forklift license. The certification is your employer’s obligation under (l)(6), and it must include your name, the training date, the evaluation date and who did the training and evaluation. A new employer cannot simply rely on the old paperwork for their equipment and workplace.
Paragraph (l)(5) lets an employer avoid duplicative training: if you were previously trained on a topic in (l)(3), that training suits the truck and conditions, and you were found competent to operate the truck safely, you do not need to repeat that topic. In practice a recent certificate can shorten the new employer’s training, but they still evaluate you on their truck in their workplace.
Does an online forklift certificate expire?
A completion certificate from an online course shows that you finished the formal instruction on a certain date. It is not a license, and OSHA sets no expiry on it. Employers commonly treat it as current for about three years, in line with the evaluation cycle, and some ask for a newer one. Check with your employer.
Our online forklift course (US$59) can be retaken any time, which makes it a handy refresher before a three-year evaluation. It does not replace the evaluation itself.
What employers should keep
- Operator name, training date, evaluation date.
- Name of the person who trained and evaluated the operator.
- The truck type(s) covered.
- Records of refresher training and the reason for it.
A reminder system that flags each operator’s three-year date is the simplest way to stay compliant.

Frequently asked questions
How long is forklift certification valid?
OSHA requires an evaluation of each operator at least once every three years under 1910.178(l)(4)(iii). Refresher training is required sooner after unsafe driving, an accident or near-miss, a new truck type or a workplace change.
Do I have to retake the forklift course every 3 years?
OSHA requires a performance evaluation every three years, not a full new course. Many employers add a refresher course alongside the evaluation, which is good practice.
Does forklift certification transfer to a new employer?
Not automatically. The certification is the employer’s record. A new employer must make sure you are trained and evaluated for their trucks and workplace, though 1910.178(l)(5) lets them credit relevant prior training.
What triggers forklift refresher training?
Unsafe operation, an accident or near-miss, an evaluation showing unsafe operation, assignment to a different type of truck, or a workplace change that could affect safe operation.
Does an online forklift certificate expire?
OSHA sets no expiry on a course completion certificate. Employers usually treat it as current for about three years. The legal requirement is the employer’s evaluation of your performance.
What happens if my forklift certification expires?
If more than three years pass without an evaluation, the employer is out of compliance. You should not operate until you are evaluated and the employer records it.
Who does the 3-year evaluation?
A person with the knowledge, training and experience to train and evaluate operators, designated by the employer. It can be an in-house trainer or an outside provider.
Can I use the same certificate for a different type of forklift?
Not automatically. A different type of truck is a refresher trigger under (l)(4)(ii)(D). The employer must train and evaluate you on it.
