This course is the online theory part of operator training. OSHA requires your employer to complete a practical evaluation of you on the equipment before you operate it.

OSHA does not approve or certify online training providers; our courses are aligned with OSHA standards, and employers remain responsible for site-specific and hands-on training.

How much does boom lift certification cost?

The Gama Safety online boom lift course costs US$69 per person, one time. That includes the course, the final exam with unlimited free retakes, a downloadable certificate of completion and a printable wallet card. Teams get volume pricing from 2 seats.

This is the online theory part of boom lift training. OSHA and the ANSI A92 standards also expect the employer to have a qualified person evaluate you on the lift you will use and to familiarize you with that specific machine. Most employers do this in-house with their own equipment, so ask yours what they provide. If you are self-employed, you need to arrange access to a lift and a qualified evaluator yourself, which can add cost. In-person classes that include time on a machine usually cost more than an online-only course, because they supply the lift and an instructor.

See the full breakdown in our aerial lift certification guide.

Do you need a license for a boom lift?

OSHA does not issue a “boom lift license,” and federal rules do not require one. OSHA requires the employer to make sure that only trained and authorized people operate an aerial lift (29 CFR 1926.453 in construction, 1910.67 in general industry). What people call a boom lift license is the proof of training your employer accepts: a certificate or operator card showing you completed theory training, were evaluated on the machine and were familiarized with it.

Your employer, or the site owner or rental company, decides who is authorized, so a certificate from any training provider does not authorize you on its own. Driving a truck-mounted boom on public roads is a separate matter that needs the normal driver’s license. Some states, employers, unions and rental companies set stricter rules than the federal minimum, so check the rules where you work.

Frequently asked questions

How much does boom lift certification cost?

The Gama Safety online boom lift course is US$69 per person, with volume pricing for teams. It covers the theory only. Your employer still has to complete a hands-on evaluation and familiarization on the boom lift you will use, so ask whether they provide it or whether you need to arrange it.

Do you need a license to operate a boom lift?

OSHA does not issue a boom lift license and federal rules do not require one. OSHA requires the employer to make sure operators are trained and authorized. In practice the proof is an employer-issued certificate or operator card based on theory training, a hands-on evaluation and machine familiarization. A driver’s license only matters for driving a truck-mounted boom on public roads.
