The US Department of Transportation requires every hazmat employee to be trained before performing hazmat job functions, under 49 CFR 172.704. That includes people who load, unload, package, mark, label, prepare shipping papers or drive vehicles carrying hazardous materials. Training must be repeated at least once every three years.
DOT hazmat training has several parts: general awareness and familiarization, function-specific training, safety training, and security awareness. This course covers general awareness and introduces safety and security topics. Function-specific training for the exact tasks you perform is your employer's responsibility, and your employer must certify that you have been trained and tested.
The course is built for shipping and receiving staff, warehouse workers, drivers, dispatchers, and anyone who prepares or handles hazardous materials for transport.
You will learn the nine hazard classes, how to use the Hazardous Materials Table, the basics of packaging, marking and labeling, placarding, shipping papers and emergency response information, and how to recognize and respond to a hazmat incident. The course also covers security awareness and the penalties for violations.
