OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l) says forklift operators must be trained and evaluated before they operate a powered industrial truck. The training has three parts: formal instruction (such as online lessons), practical training, and an evaluation of the operator's performance in the workplace. This online course covers the formal instruction part.
Please read this before you buy: this is online theory training. OSHA requires a practical evaluation on the equipment by your employer (or a person the employer chooses) before you can operate a forklift. An online course on its own cannot make you a certified forklift operator.
The course is built for new operators, experienced operators who need a refresher, warehouse and distribution staff, and supervisors who run forklift programs. It is aligned with the training topics listed in 1910.178(l)(3).
You will learn the main forklift types, how the stability triangle and load center work, how to read a data plate, how to do a pre-use inspection, and how to pick up, carry, stack and unstack loads safely. The course also covers ramps and grades, pedestrians, docks and trailers, refueling and battery charging, and the most common causes of tip-overs and struck-by incidents.
The course is 100% online and self-paced, and it works on desktop, tablet or phone in all 50 states. You get unlimited free exam retakes (pass mark 80%), and as soon as you pass you can download your certificate and a printable wallet card. Employers can buy team accounts from 2 seats and track completions in one place.
OSHA requires a performance evaluation at least once every three years, and refresher training after an incident or near miss, an unsafe operation, a poor evaluation, or a change to a different type of truck or workplace condition.
Aligned with OSHA standards:
This course is the online theory part of operator training. OSHA requires your employer to complete a practical evaluation of you on the equipment before you operate it.
