Lifting with a crane or hoist depends on two people doing their jobs correctly: the rigger who attaches the load and the signal person who directs the operator. This course teaches the knowledge behind both jobs, aligned with the crane rules in OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC and the sling rules in 29 CFR 1910.184.
Please read this before you buy: this course alone does not qualify anyone. Under Subpart CC the employer determines who is a qualified rigger, and a signal person must pass an oral or written test and a practical test given by a qualified evaluator. This is online knowledge training only.
The course is built for riggers, signal persons, ironworkers, laborers, crane and hoist crews, and supervisors who plan lifts. The rules taught are construction rules (Subpart CC); overhead crane hand signals are not taught.
It has 10 modules: roles, rules and what "qualified" means; slings and their tags and limits; inspecting slings and removing them from service; hitches and safe sling practice; sling angles and load factors; load weight and center of gravity; rigging hardware; making the lift (planning, fall zone and load control); power line safety; and hand, voice and radio signals, including the 19 standard hand signals described in the regulation's Appendix A. The sling angle and weight modules include worked arithmetic.
The course is 100% online and self-paced and works on desktop, tablet or phone. You can stop and continue anytime, and your progress saves automatically. It ends with a 30-question final exam (pass mark 80%, unlimited free retakes, highest score counts). When you pass you can download a certificate of completion. The course is in English only. Employers can buy team accounts from 2 seats and track completions in one place.
