Does OSHA require ladder safety training?
Yes. Under 29 CFR 1926.1060 (Construction) and 29 CFR 1910.30 (General Industry), every employer must provide training to each employee who uses a ladder. What is the 4-to-1 rule for extension ladders?
The 4-to-1 rule is the OSHA-recommended way to set an extension ladder at the correct angle: for every 4 feet of vertical height between the ground and where the ladder touches the wall, the base of the ladder should be 1 foot away from the wall. This produces the standard 75.5-degree climbing angle. Simple check: stand at the base with your toes touching the ladder feet, extend your arms straight forward — your palms should just touch the rungs at shoulder height.
What is the 3-point contact rule?
The 3-point contact rule is the fundamental principle of safe ladder climbing: at all times while climbing or descending, you must maintain three points of contact with the ladder — either two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. Does this course replace Fall Protection training?
No. Ladder Safety and Fall Protection are two separate OSHA training requirements. Ladder Safety covers safe use of portable and fixed ladders. Fall Protection covers personal fall arrest systems (PFAS), harnesses, anchor points, and fall prevention at heights of 6+ feet (construction) or 4+ feet (general industry). Many workers need BOTH.
