Forklift certification typically costs about $40 to $80 for an online course and a few hundred dollars for an in-person class. Gama Safety’s online forklift course is US$59. Under OSHA rules the employer must provide operator training, so many workers pay nothing. Whatever the price of the online part, the hands-on evaluation on the truck is still required.
Quick answer: prices at a glance
| Option | Typical price | What you get | Still needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online course (individual) | $40 to $80 (ours: US$59) | Formal instruction, exam, certificate, wallet card | Hands-on training and evaluation by employer |
| In-person class | Several hundred dollars (ours in Fresno: US$199 per person at time of writing) | Instruction, driving practice and practical evaluation | Workplace-specific familiarization, 3-year re-evaluation |
| Train-the-trainer | Ours: US$199 | Training for the person who will train and evaluate operators in-house | Employer must still evaluate each operator |
In short: the online course is the cheapest way to cover the classroom part, and the in-person class is the way to get everything in one place if you have no employer or truck to practice on.
What online forklift training costs
Online forklift courses for individuals usually run about $40 to $80. The price depends on the provider and whether the certificate, wallet card and retakes are included. Be careful with very cheap or “free” courses that charge extra for the certificate after you finish.
Our online forklift course is US$59 and includes the exam (unlimited free retakes), an instant certificate, a printable wallet card and an employer practical evaluation checklist. The course takes about two hours.
What in-person forklift classes cost
Classes at training centers typically cost a few hundred dollars because they include instructor time, a truck and a practice area. Prices vary by city and by how long the class is.

Who pays for forklift certification?
OSHA’s rule, 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(1), says the employer shall ensure that each operator is competent to operate a powered industrial truck safely, as demonstrated by successful completion of the training and evaluation. In practice, employers normally arrange and pay for training for operators they hire or assign, and many will accept an online certificate for the classroom portion.
If you are looking for work, paying for the online course yourself can make you more attractive to an employer, since it reduces what they need to train. If you are already employed, ask your supervisor before you buy anything.
Train-the-trainer: when it is cheaper
If you have a crew of operators, it can be cheaper to qualify one person as the in-house trainer and evaluator. OSHA requires that anyone who trains and evaluates operators have the knowledge, training and experience to do so. Our Forklift Train-the-Trainer course is US$199 and prepares a person to run the training program. It does not by itself make someone qualified, since experience with the trucks also matters.

How much does it cost to renew forklift certification?
OSHA requires an evaluation at least every three years, not a new course. The cost is mostly the evaluator’s time. Many employers add a short refresher course, which online can cost the same as the original.
Is the cheapest forklift course the best?
Not necessarily. Check that the course covers the topics in 1910.178(l)(3), has a real exam and does not charge extra for the certificate. Avoid anything claiming OSHA approval or full certification online.
