What you need to know
OSHA’s forklift rule, 29 CFR 1910.178(l), requires formal instruction, hands-on practice and an evaluation of how you operate the truck. Our hands-on class covers all three: classroom theory, driving practice and a practical evaluation on a sit-down forklift.
OSHA does not issue licenses for forklift operators, and it does not approve or certify training schools. Your employer authorizes you to operate their trucks at their workplace and may add a short site-specific check. Give them your certificate as proof of training.
In California, Cal/OSHA applies the same rule in Title 8, Section 3668 (8 CCR 3668).
Where it’s valid
- Training and practical evaluation that meet 29 CFR 1910.178(l); give your certificate to your employer as proof of training
- Your employer still completes the site-specific evaluation and authorizes you to operate
- Re-evaluation at least every 3 years, or sooner after an incident, near miss or a new type of truck
What the class covers
- Classroom theory: stability, capacity and the data plate, safe driving rules
- Hands-on practice: pre-use inspection, driving and handling loads
- Practical evaluation by your instructor, then a training certificate and wallet card
Want to start with the theory now? Our online forklift course covers the classroom part; you still need a hands-on evaluation on the truck.
