Is Online Forklift Certification OSHA Approved? (Legit or Not)

The rule

Online allowed for

Formal (classroom) instruction

Not allowed online

Practical training and the workplace evaluation

Who certifies you

Your employer, not OSHA

Online forklift training is legitimate and OSHA allows it, but no online forklift course is “OSHA approved,” because OSHA does not approve, certify or accredit any training provider. Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), the classroom portion can be done by computer. Your employer must still give you hands-on training and evaluate you on the truck, then certify you. The online course is one valid part of the process, not the whole of it.

What OSHA actually says about online training

The forklift rule is 29 CFR 1910.178(l). Paragraph (l)(2)(ii) says operators must be trained through a combination of formal instruction (for example lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, video and written material), practical training (demonstrations and exercises by the trainer, and exercises by the trainee), and an evaluation of the operator’s performance in the workplace.

So “interactive computer learning” is written right into the standard. That is the legal basis for online forklift courses. The same paragraph makes the other two pieces mandatory, and neither can be done through a screen.

Paragraph (l)(6) then says the employer must certify that each operator has been trained and evaluated, with the operator’s name, the training date, the evaluation date and the identity of the person who did the training or evaluation.

Why no course is “OSHA approved”

OSHA does not run an approval or accreditation program for forklift trainers or training companies. When it wrote the rule it chose to require that trainers have the knowledge, training and experience to train and evaluate operators, rather than creating a credential. The only OSHA-authorized training program that issues cards is the Outreach Training Program (the 10-hour and 30-hour cards), which is a different thing and does not cover forklift operation.

That means a course can be aligned with 29 CFR 1910.178, meaning its content covers the topics in paragraph (l)(3), but it cannot honestly be called OSHA approved, OSHA certified or OSHA authorized. If you see those words on a forklift course, treat them as a red flag.

What an online forklift certificate does prove

A completion certificate from a good online course shows that you finished formal instruction and passed an exam on the required topics: truck types and controls, stability, load capacity, inspections, refueling and charging, pedestrians and workplace hazards. Many employers accept it as proof of the classroom portion, which can save them time and money.

It does not prove you can safely drive a specific truck in a specific building. That is what the practical training and evaluation are for.

What your employer still has to do

  1. Practical training on the type of truck you will use, with demonstrations and supervised practice.
  2. An evaluation of your driving and load handling in the real work area. OSHA requires a re-evaluation at least once every three years (1910.178(l)(4)(iii)).
  3. Workplace-specific training on ramps, docks, aisles, pedestrian traffic and any attachments.
  4. A written certification with the details listed in (l)(6).

If you are a job seeker, completing the online theory first is a sensible move, but you will not be fully qualified to operate on your own until the employer completes these steps.

How to spot a bad online forklift course

  • It claims to be “OSHA approved,” “OSHA certified” or “OSHA accredited.”
  • It says you will be “fully certified online” or “licensed” with no mention of a hands-on evaluation. There is no federal forklift license.
  • There is no real exam, or the answers are given away.
  • It does not list what topics it covers or who to contact with questions.
  • It promises certification in a few minutes.
  • It offers no evaluation checklist or record your employer can use.

A legitimate provider says plainly what the course covers and what the employer must add.

How our course fits

Gama Safety’s online forklift course (US$59) is aligned with 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(3), takes about two hours, has an exam with unlimited free retakes, and gives you an instant certificate and printable wallet card. It also includes an employer practical evaluation checklist. We do not claim it is OSHA approved, and it does not replace the hands-on evaluation. If you would rather do the hands-on part with us, see the Fresno, CA class.

Frequently asked questions

Is online forklift certification legit?

Yes, as the classroom part. OSHA lists interactive computer learning as an allowed method of formal instruction in 1910.178(l)(2)(ii). It is legitimate only when your employer also provides practical training and a workplace evaluation and certifies you.

Does OSHA approve online forklift courses?

No. OSHA does not approve, certify or accredit forklift training providers or courses. A course can be aligned with 29 CFR 1910.178, but any claim of OSHA approval is inaccurate.

Can I operate a forklift with only an online certificate?

No. OSHA requires practical training and an evaluation of your performance in the workplace before you operate a truck without supervision. The online certificate covers the formal instruction only.

Will my employer accept an online forklift certificate?

Many employers accept it as proof of the classroom portion, but they decide. They still have to train you on their trucks, evaluate you and certify you in writing.

Is there a forklift license?

No. There is no federal or state forklift license in the US. What exists is your employer’s certification that you were trained and evaluated, as required by 1910.178(l)(6).

How much does an online forklift course cost?

Most online forklift courses cost about $40 to $80. Ours is US$59. In-person classes that include time on a truck usually cost more.

Is an OSHA 10 card the same as forklift certification?

No. The OSHA 10-hour card comes from the Outreach Training Program and covers general hazard awareness. It does not satisfy the forklift operator training and evaluation required by 1910.178(l). Gama Safety does not sell Outreach cards.

How long does the online forklift training take?

About two hours for most people, self-paced. The hands-on training and evaluation add a few more hours at the workplace, depending on your experience and the truck.
