The OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response standard (HAZWOPER), 29 CFR 1910.120(e), requires training for general site workers at cleanup sites whose work exposes or may expose them to hazardous substances and health hazards. They need at least 40 hours of instruction off the site and at least three days of actual field experience under a trained, experienced supervisor.
Please read this before you buy: this course is the online instruction only. It does not make you HAZWOPER certified and does not by itself make you ready or permitted to work on a hazardous waste site. OSHA's letters say online training alone does not meet the requirement. Your employer must still provide: (1) hands-on practice with the protective equipment you will use, completed before the field experience; (2) the respirator medical evaluation and fit test; (3) site-specific training on your site's hazards and safety plan; (4) at least three days of actual field experience under direct supervision; and (5) certification by the instructor and the trained supervisor under 1910.120(e)(6), after the training and field experience.
A self-employed worker with no employer or site operator to provide these parts will not become eligible for site work with this course alone. The course is not emergency responder training, which is a different requirement.
The course is built as 23 modules covering the standard and who it covers, rights and responsibilities, the site safety and health plan, chemical properties, toxicology and exposure limits, fire, explosion and biological hazards, labels and SDS, site characterization, work zones and site control, air monitoring and instruments, medical surveillance, PPE and chemical protective clothing, Levels A to D, respiratory protection, decontamination, drums and spills, sampling and shipping, confined spaces, heat and cold, site hazards, and emergency response, ending with a full site scenario and a 100-question final exam. A printable Employer Completion Record lists the hands-on skills, fit test, site-specific topics and field days your employer must complete.
