What the price does not include: field experience
This is the part many buyers miss. 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3)(i) requires general site workers to complete, in addition to 40 hours of off-site instruction, a minimum of three days of actual field experience under the direct supervision of a trained, experienced supervisor. For the 24-hour level, (e)(3)(ii) and (iii) require a minimum of one day of actual field experience.
No online course provides that field experience. It happens on the job and is arranged and documented by your employer. So a HAZWOPER course price is the cost of the classroom hours, and the field days are a cost of time and supervision for the employer. If a provider says online training alone makes you “fully HAZWOPER certified,” the claim leaves out a legal requirement.
