Yes, you can do the HAZWOPER classroom hours online, and the 8-hour annual refresher too, but online training does not cover everything OSHA requires. 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3) also requires three days of actual field experience under a trained, experienced supervisor for the 40-hour level, and one day for the 24-hour level. Your employer arranges that on the job.

What the OSHA rule says
29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3)(i) says general site workers must receive, in addition to 40 hours of initial off-site instruction, a minimum of three days of actual field experience under the direct supervision of a trained, experienced supervisor. Paragraphs (e)(3)(ii) and (iii) set the 24-hour level with a minimum of one day of actual field experience. Paragraph (e)(8) requires covered employees to receive eight hours of refresher training annually.
The standard does not ban computer-based instruction for the classroom portion. What it requires is that the employer ensure the training covers the required topics and that the trainer is qualified. The field experience is, by definition, actual experience on a site, so it cannot be delivered through a screen.
How the field experience works
The employer arranges field experience at a job site where the worker performs tasks under a trained, experienced supervisor, who watches over their work and the hazards present. The days are documented in the worker’s training record. Online providers do not supervise field days, and they do not know your workplace.
For workers who have not yet been hired, this is the step that must wait for a job. Many people complete the classroom hours first so they are ready to start field days as soon as an employer places them on a site.

The 8-hour refresher online
The annual refresher is where online delivery fits best. Paragraph (e)(8) requires eight hours a year on the topics in (e)(2) and, where applicable, (e)(4), and nothing about field experience is added. Our 8-hour refresher is US$49.
California note: 8 CCR 5192
California’s Cal/OSHA HAZWOPER rule is Title 8, section 5192. Its training paragraph (e) uses the same structure as the federal rule, with 40 hours plus a minimum of three days of actual field experience for general site workers, and one day for the 24-hour level. If you work in California or another state-plan state, check with your employer or the state agency to confirm that any state-specific requirements are met.
How to choose an online HAZWOPER course
- It should say clearly that field experience is separate and is arranged by the employer.
- It should list the topics in 1910.120(e)(2), not just a number of hours.
- It should have a real exam and instant certificates, with no extra fees to download.
- It should not claim OSHA approval. OSHA does not approve online training providers.
- It should offer support if you get stuck.
